Robert “Sput” Searight
This is one slick mother of a musician. To those of us who know Searight for his long time role in Snarky Puppy, it may come as a surprise that the Dallas drummer has written a whole other chapter in the book of funk, pop, and hip-hop, playing with & even producing top artists like Justin Timberlake, Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, P Diddy, and Celine Dion. When Sput lays it down, you’re going to marvel at how he nails tricky accents and punches—many of which would give the rest of us a hernia.
If you’ve seen Snarky Puppy live, you’ve see that Sput doesn’t give it away in the first 32-bars. He’s exploring acoustics, playing the room. Combine him with Michael League, Snarky Puppy bassist/composer/arranger, and you’ve got a sophisticated and lethal rhythm section. Sput’s rimshot 2 & 4, his unique hi-hat patterns, and his ghosting harken to James Brown’s drummers back in the day.
Perhaps one reason Searight grooves so heavy is his facility on keyboards. For a taste, search youtube for his jams at the Tini Bar in Dallas. He’s not just covering on keyboards, he’s locking down exuberant drummers who are bursting with ideas. Sput controls the ebb and flow of complex rhythms—just as he does behind the kit.
